  1. How can I get in the First Step to College Success program?
  2. I got a letter from EKU Admissions telling me that I have to come to the First Step program. Why?
    • If you got a letter from EKU Admissions telling you that you must attend the First Step program, then it is likely that:
      • Your composite ACT score is less than 15,
      • You have a high school GPA of less than 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, and
      • You probably have two or more developmental course needs
  3. When does the summer 2009 First Step program begin and end?
    • June 29 - August 7, 2009
  4. Can I do First Step in the fall?
    • First Step to College Success is only offered during the second summer session.
  5. What kinds of classes will I take in the First Step program?
    • If you only need to take one developmental education class, then you will take that class, GSO 102, and a three-credit-hour EKU general education course, such as English 101 or Sociology 131.
    • If you need two developmental education classes, then you will take those two classes and GSO 102, a transition-to-college course.
    • All First Step students take 3 classes worth 9 college credit hours.
    • All First Step students take GSO 102: Transition to College.
  6. If I sign up for the First Step program, when will I do my orientation?
    • June 4, 2009, is New Student Orientation for First Step students. This date is not open to other students, and is not found on the EKU Orientation web site. So, to reserve your spot and sign up for placement testing, please call EKU First Year Programs and tell them that you are in the First Step program: 859-622-1682.
    • More orientation info may be found here: http://www.firstyear.eku.edu/orientation/.

    • Housing:
      • A $100 housing application fee must be paid when you complete your application for summer housing. (This is a one-time fee; you do not have to pay it again for fall 2009 housing.)
      • $660 is what is costs to live in a residence hall during the six weeks of the First Step program

  8. Can I get financial aid while I am in the First Step program?
    • Most First Step students receive financial aid
    • All students who apply for the First Step program should complete the free online FAFSA form found at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
    • You or your parents must complete two different FAFSA forms to get financial aid for summer and fall:
      • For summer 2009 financial aid, you or your parents will need to complete the 2008-09 FAFSA form, using 2007 tax information
      • For fall 2009 financial aid, you or your parents will need to complete the 2009-10 FAFSA form, using 2008 tax information.
  9. What should I bring with me when I come to the First Step program?
    • Basic school supplies, such as notebooks and paper, folders, binders, pens, pencils, and a jump drive
    • Hall rooms come equipped with cable, Internet, and wireless Internet access. It is okay to bring your TV, your stereo, and your desk-top computer or lap top.
    • You may bring a microwave for your room if it is 650 watts or less.
    • If you want a land line, you will have to bring your own touch-tone phone.
    • Shower shoes or flip-flops.
    • Towels, washcloths.
    • Bed linens and your favorite pillow.
    • Snack food or easy-to-fix-in-your-room food. (There are plenty of stores in Richmond where you can buy food after you get to EKU, including a grocery store within walking distance of campus.)
    • Electronic games or old-school card and board games for downtime.
    • Curtains, pillows, posters, photos, or whatever else you think will make your room comfortable.
    • Remember, you are only going to be on campus for six weeks, and you must clear out your room at the end of the summer semester. So, you may want to consider bringing the bulk of your stuff when you return for fall.
